Space 101 forum emphasizes space, missile capabilities

About 25 civilian distinguished visitors taking part in Guardian Challenge 2006 were officially indoctrinated in space Wednesday when Brig. Gen. Don Alston, Air Force Space Command director of air and space operations, presented a 'Space 101' briefing here.
General Alston described the country's capabilities in space in an easily digestible format so that visitors could discuss AFSPC's assets, capabilities and challenges with their neighbors at home.
The need for recapitalization was an underlying theme of the presentation. Other topics included space support, force enhancement, space superiority and force application. The discussion captured missions, requirements and challenges.
Through a description of AFSPC satellite systems and space launch support, General Alston underscored that the command delivers capabilities needed to maintain our nation's quality of life and emphasized the importance of space assets in supporting the Global War on Terror.
Beyond the basics of the command's space missions and followon systems, visitors received updates on the command's critical strategic deterrent mission and improved intercontinental ballistic missile efficiency and sustainment resulting from recent upgrades.
Numbered Air Force, center and wing commanders attended the forum, along with AFSPC Commander Gen. Kevin Chilton, who fielded questions from the visitors about space orbits, security of space assets and follow-on systems.
